A dental assistant externship is a temporary position in a practicing dentist’s office where you put your newly learned skills to work.
An externship is intended to provide exposure to an actual working environment, further qualifying your training and setting you up for success. Externships also provide you exposure to various dental specialties and practices so that you can get a better feel for your career options and how you’d like to grow. Externship programs begin after you have completed your sixth week of classwork. If more convenient, externship hours can be completed once you have finished the entire classroom course.
VIP Dental Assisting Academy recommends that you complete at least 40 hours of a dental assistant externship. Externships are recommended but not required. Externship hours are a personal commitment of your time; these hours are not included in our coursework. That said, hours of externships on resumes are critical –– the more, the better, as externship hours equate to experience. Also, externships can be considered working interviews in the right place at the right time.
